Keeping claws sharp is instinctive
behaviour. Cats allowed to
roam freely outside will sharpen
their claws on a tree or fence post, often returning to the
same one day after day. Cats kept
indoors will instinctively find an object for that purpose,
and if furniture and carpets are
not to be damaged a scratching post must be provided.
It is fruitless to try to discourage
an indoor cat from scratching furniture without providing
an alternative. Cats need to
sharpen those claws to keep them in tip top condition, and for
once cats are not fussy on what they
sharpen those claws on.
Scratching posts are
essential to the cat's general well being. They are not just a play
thing
or a diversions from your own house
furniture, thus allowing the cat to maintain it's claws and exercise.
